Exotic Locations and Extreme Conditions make for an Epic Adventure!
Likening themselves to the heroic athletes from Cool Runnings, Team Vanuatu Adventure will compete against Australia’s best in a 24hr Adventure Race on the Sunshine Coast labeled as “Hells Bells”.
Consisting of indigenous guides Mark, Max and Tim from an adventure company called Edge (Vanuatu) and their Australian born leader Troy Spann, have followed a strict training regime in preparation for the 17-18 October race.
Volcano Runs are just the start for Team Vanuatu, as these words from Troy reveal a whole new level of workout hell…
“Oh My God! I have never put so much effort into anything. Max and I are training 7 days a week for around 20 hours, Tim and Mark are missing the odd training session. I feel like I owe it to everyone now that I have involved in this…especially the boys who are so much fitter than me and I want to keep up with, and in a real way I owe it to Vanuatu, to go over there and make a good showing of ourselves, delusional I know but I haven’t given up the idea of winning the thing. Three weeks in, I’m getting stronger, losing weight, running longer distances, pushing myself up those hills on the bike ride. I actually think I will be ready for the race.”
Hells Bells is a non-stop 24hr adventure race involving trekking, mountain biking, kayaking and other adventure disciplines. Mixed, Male or Female teams of must navigate their way unsupported through an arduous 100+km course that is only revealed to them hours before the race. The Fairy Bells adventure race is run at the same time as Hells Bells. It covers only half the distance but teams have the full 24hrs to complete it. The legs will be challenging, but with the additional time available to complete the half course, it is well suited to first time adventure racers.
Team Vanuatu Adventure are currently planning their own adventure race to be held in Vanuatu next year and are offering an all expenses prize to this event for the first placed team. Competition will be tough with winners from interstate races such as the Rat Race in the ACT, the Maximum Adventure 24hr race in NSW and Caffeinated 24hr race in WA all attending.
Headquarters for the Hells Bells and Fairy Bells adventure races is the idyllic holiday location of Mooloolaba on the Queensland Sunshine Coast. This renowned 24hr adventure race retains it’s tough reputation in such a relaxed holiday spot by transporting competitors to the start up to 100km away. They will then race their way back taking in both the hinterland and Sunshine Coast.
Hells Bells and Fairy Bells are designed to be “race friendly” for interstate and New Zealand teams. The race is unsupported, kayaks are provided and there are assistance options for teams travelling to the event. Many interstate and overseas teams race the event each year.
Hells Bells and Fairy Bells receive generous support from Area51 and Endura.
