Far from the ‘fashion on the fields’ festivals of race week in Melbourne, Nadaam is an ancient horse festival where Mongolian’s mount mustangs for a wild ride followed by more warrior pursuits in wrestling and archery! For the curious adventurer it is a chance to witness feats of athletic prowess and experience a great nomadic culture.

mongolia-naadam-festivalThe festival takes place between the 11-13th of July every year as the whole of Mongolia stops work to celebrate their three national sports. Every town and village partakes of the colorful affair but the biggest and most famous celebration is in the capital Ulaan Baatar.

Not just for men, Mongolian women and children are given equal opportunity in both the horse racing and archery events displaying skills that leave no room for questioning their gender or age.

Every aspect of this ancient festival has huge appeal for those who love adventure but the most impressive of these are the horse races.

Picture 1To see a child (potentially as young as 5) take on the challenge of a 12 mile (20 km) race bareback over rough terrain, is awe inspiring. With up to 400 horses and many more riders, mounts and families in attendance this is one gigantic gathering full of competitive spirit and generosity.

Hankering for a taste of tradition? Then make like the Mongolians who camp-out in the capital to feast on a barbeque whilst watching their warriors challenge for champion in this wickedly wild ride!
